a5c7b9f00b When the mystical bearer of virtue and kindness, the Golden Child, is abducted by the mysterious Sardo Numspa, the fine balance between the forces of good and evil is disturbed with unforeseen consequences. To save humanity, the beautiful Tibetan Kee Nang recruits the Los Angeles-based freelance lost children searcher, Chandler Jarrell, to find the missing boy; however, his scepticism seems to get in the way. But soon, Jarrell will realise that all that stands between the Golden Child and the powers of darkness are his expertise, his skills and his determination to save the world. Is Chandler indeed the chosen one? A private detective specializing in missing children is charged with the task of finding a special child who dark forces want to eliminate. I dunno what it is about this movie that draws comparisons to "Big Trouble in Little China". Same year of release, similar east-west collision, a like-minded plunge into a bizarre underworld . . .

But its hero is completely different. Eddie Murphy puts his comedic talents to likable use here, playing a capable P.I. who's dragged into something that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. A smartass who's always quick with a snide observation. But he's also a solid physical presence, and when pushed , can believably put some punk in a hurt locker.

I walked into this thinking Charles Dance would steal the movie (he's surprisingly muted here), but this is an Eddie Murphy vehicle.

And that's a good thing.

7/10 Mystic baddie Sardo Numspa, seeking to do away with The Golden Child, is challenged by missing child detective Chandler Jarrell when the action moves from Tibet to Los Angeles.

After a straight faced set up, with Charles Dance quite chillingNumspa the nature of the film changes at the same timethe location, with the arrival of Eddie Murphywisecracking Jarrell. The film then becomes a decent romp - lots of action, some special effects which are mostly a bit shoddy even by the standards of the time, a dash of improbable romance, and Eddie Murphy being even Eddie Murphier than usual. This latter point means that he's really irritating, of course, but the character is drawn warmly which defuses it somewhat. Charles Dance is good, Charlotte Lewis is attractive, James Hong is great (as usual) and Jasmine Reate is charmingthe Golden Child himself.

While not being great, this is still a fairly solidly entertaining movie pitched at family level. The action sequences are cloddishly orchestrated. And for the most part, the movie simply doesn't make sense.
